Finding Inner Peace with the Dali Lama

July 6th marked the beginning of Kalachakra, a Buddhist ceremony. To promote world peace , the Dali Lama came to the US Capitol to chat with Americans about finding inner peace, the key to world peace. I really enjoyed being apart of the event. Though his english isn’t very good, I think it worked to his advantage. His simple phrases helped to drive home the notion that finding inner peace isn’t rocket science. In fact, we make most things way too complicated and complex and create stress for ourselves. 

Here are my takeaways from Saturday’s event:

1. Be honest, truthful, and transparent. This will create trust in your relationships and build communication.

2. Thinking of others first is good for your health. There is a study that shows people who use “I” more often have higher blood pressure, stress levels, and are at higher risks for heart conditions.

3. Holding on to anger, frustrations, or being too attached prevents you from seeing things objectively.

4. Your enemy can be your greatest teacher.

5. To find inner peace you have to practice, research, and experiment with different techniques. This will help you to develop conviction in for something in your life.


In addition to the Dali Lama’s appearance, the event was hosted by Whoopi Goldberg, there was a video from Desmond Tutu, and a performance by Skyler Grey.
